Seldom-seen pro-William Howard Taft pinback button from the 1912 campaign. This black and white celluloid pinback button states simply that “Good Republicans Don’t Bolt a Party Ticket.” This is, of course, a reference to the splintering of the Republican party when Theodore Roosevelt attempted to regain the presidency in 1912. While sporting success in the nascent primary system, Roosevelt’s Progressive forces were no match for the party machine which supported Taft’s renomination. After losing at the Republican National Convention, the Progressive forces bolted, wound up holding their own convention, and nominated TR on the Bull Moose/Progressive ticket. This button is an appeal to voters to stay the course and vote the Party ticket – meaning Taft. Very good condition as seen in the photos. Retains its original backpaper from the” J. H.
