1914 President William Howard Taft Autograph Letter Signed - 4 Page Letter For Sale
Very Rare, original, 1914, Autograph Letter Signed by President William Howard Taft on his personal stationary and in its original envelope addressed in the hand of Taft. This original, four page letter is written entirely in the hand of William Howard Taft to his long time friend and United States Circuit Court Judge Howard C. Hollister (Ohio jurist, and life-long friend Taft who nominated him as Judge for the US Southern District of Ohio [Cincinnati] serving from 1910 to 1919). Each page of the Letter measures approx. 5" by 7 3/4" and it is written on a folding stationary sheet with printed text at the top of the first page which reads "William H. Taft / New Haven, Conn.".
The Letter is dated May 18th, 1914 and reads:
"Dear Hol, / I have a lecture at 10:30 A.M. Monday Morning May 25th and another at 12:30 P.M. The consequence is that I must leave Cincinnati Sunday Morning in order to reach New York in time to catch the 8 o'clock train from New York to New Haven which will land me here in time for my first lecture.. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to take a day off, and especially a Sunday, and look upon the East Walnut Hills and the "Point" in its present lovely state, and to while away the hours talking over old and present times with you and Alice, but I am a working man and my hours are fixed. / I would be glad to speak to your fellow Calvinists about foreign missions as they strike an original sinner, but I must for duty's sake postpone the pleasure. / I am pretty busy now - I have two lectures today - three tomorrow, one the next day - a lecture on legal ethics in Albany on Thursday, a Commencement address at Cincinnati Law School on Friday and then I am the Toast Master at the Yale dinner on Saturday. How is that for throat practice? I feel that Bryan will have to look after his laurels. / I am going to talk to the Law School on the attacks on the Const. and make some suggestions as to needed (?) in Legal Practice. / Give my love to Alice. Nellie has been much occupied this week with some friends from Washington who have been staying with us. / Affectionately yours, / (signed) Bill".
Accompanying this Letter is its original envelope addressed in the hand of President Taft and also a printed stationary matching the letter sheet. This Letter was written just a bit over a year after Taft was defeated in his offer for re-election to the Presidency and while serving as the Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and Legal History at Yale Law School and as President of the American Bar Association.
This rare and wonderful and highly personal hand written letter is in excellent condition - clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved. The hand writing is dark and bold as is the personal signature "Bill". The original envelope is neatly opened along the top edge and exhibits some light toning and some soiling.
