1916 Straits Settlements Passport - Stamps Singapore Malaya Penang Malaysia Wwi:
An original passport issued by the Straits Settlements in 1916. The passport was issued to Gerald Evelyn Penny (1878-1955) who lists his occupation as 'broker'.
As many of the visa stamps date to the first world war period I believe it is probable that Gerald was assisting his rather better-known brother George Frederick Penny, 1st Viscount Marchwood (1876-1955), later a Conservative politician who, during World War One, served as a senior partner of Fraser & Co., Government brokers of Singapore, and was a representative of the Federated Malay States in negotiations with the Netherlands Indies government.
The passport was issued at Government House, Singapore, and signed by a representative of Sir Arthur Young. It bears Penny's personal details along with a photograph of him and several passport renewals and endorsements including Singapore, Batavia, Colombo and trips across France from the ferry port atMarseille(most English at this time boarded vessels bound for the Far-East at Marseille and travelled across France by train). The stamps adhered to the passport include 1 x $5, 2 x $2, 4 x 50c, 1 x 2s "passport" stamp, 1 x 2s "Consular Service" stamp.
Also contains a photograph loosely inserted of Gerald Penny in later life.
The covers are of the original stiff cloth-covered boards with the British coat-of-arms.
Condition:Some creasing and minor perforations, but generally very good for a passport of 1916. The covers slightly rubbed to the extremities.
