World War I.
Howard W. Robbins
Patrolling and Scouting is very important work and is a source of a great deal of very valuable information. If good, efficient patrolling and scouting is continually maintained, it is a great protection from surprise, serves to keep up the morale and confidence of our troops, and tends to lower that of the enemies'...In trench warfare, night patrolling only, can be done, except with great risk....In open warfare, it can be done both day and night
