1918 World War I Soldier Diary 133 Machine Gun Battalion Attack This is a wonderful handwritten diary from Corp Albert A Schwartz from the 133rdMachine Gun Battalion.It is 20 pages handwritten and is in good condition.It says in part:Arrived at City Point VA at 4 AM and the Red Cross served refreshments Wed morning boarded the Smithfield New York and arrived at Norfolk at 2:30A thirteen day voyage arrived in France at 9:30 AM left the boat at 2:30 and rode on a tug to the shore at Brest and walked 5 miles to a rest Camp stayed in Brest for 7 days stayed in our tents rained every day….Stayed up all night and got on a cattle car rode for three days arrived at st Armand…Had machine gun drill, gas drill and throw hand grenades and pistol manual and firing for 10 days…Was on divisional ration detail for 2 days then left for the front walked all day till about 8…slept behind the lines in a trench met the 133 Machine Gun Battalion in a thicket and had first meal for 2 days was assigned to a squad and started for action…Stopped by Artillery Barage and air attack went into action at 5 PM…come back to Powers under Artillery Barage…Hiked till 11:30 over shell torn roads slept under the stars…large ammunition dump and dug out…Left here after the Armistice celebration lots of Champagne…Hiked to Aurville and slept on cement floor in a café had a good time, heavy frost and cold hike to Duromont at 2:30 camped overnight in a barn…Slept in a dance hall and cabaret had a good time dancing and lots of drink, left here Thanksgiving day bought a loaf of French bread…Hike to Eroy 14 kilos left on US Box cars rode for 28 hours arrived at La Fest Bernard had a field inspection…Rode in Amer box cars arrived at Brest Sunday evening at 3:30 after stating in La Bernard.Hiked up the hill to the camp had eats and rushed us through the system like a clock, took a bath was issued new clothes and worked like a clock had a bath and new clothes in 10 minutesBe sure to add me to your favorites list!
