This is an endlessly entertaining, impressive, thick, magical version of Cinderella, one of our favourite and best books! The book is, of course, none other than Arthur Rackham's first edition of Cinderella, superbly illustrated and decorated, Limited Signed Edition, and very special and exceedingly rare as one of the 325 luxurious and precious copies printed on Japanese Vellum!
Book: Cinderella, illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Retold by C. S. Evans. ( A very charming and humourous version of Cinderella, enhanced by the writer's talent of Evans. A pleasure to read.) Publisher: William Heinemann, London, 1919. Full colour lithograph frontis, numerous black-and-white and tri-tone silhouette illustrations and vignettes, many full page. Profusely illustrated and decorated, almost every page has a charming Victorian style silhouette or vignette by Arthur Rackham. Exceedingly scarce as one of the 325 copies on precious Japanese vellum. ( Additional copies were issued on English hand-made paper). Top edge gilt, others uncut, or rough cut. Substantial quarto. Book condition: A lovely copy of this very charming book. As shown in photos, below. Charming period-style gilt parchment binding after the original 1919 design by Arthur Rackham, with Cinderella on upper board. New endpapers, binding thus very tight and square. Tissue over frontis with some sligh typical warping and folds, shown, as is typical to most tissues within Heinemann, Hodder and Stoughton Golden Age Limited Signed Editions. First page with a slight fold in corner, please see photos, very minor. Spotting to reverse of last free blank ( the reverse of printer's details), and to reverse of half title, otherwise, as shown, quite bright and clean. New endpapers. Binding is very strong and tight, therefore and completely square. Exposed paper edges darkened and spotted, also as is typical, stating for the sake of accuracy, this is common to all of the Limited Editions of this vintage that I have seen. Overall, very bright and clean, please view the images. No bookplates or inscriptions. Arthur Rackham's signature on the limitation page clear. A lovely copy of this timeless all-time favourite classic, very special as this scarce editon on Japanese Vellum. A wonderful gift.
