HIGHLY DECORATIVE ENGLISH STERLING SILVER TEA CADDY WITH CHINOISERIE DECORATION

Description:
Highly decorative English sterling silver tea caddy from the early 20th century. It adopts a retro-looking triangular shape, and it is decorated with three Chinese subjects, but treated with a clear Western flavour, which is what is known as Chinoiserie. If Chinese subjects were favourites of European artists since the 17th century, the opening of Japan to the world, brought about a renewed interest in these subjects during the second half of the 19th century, and it would not wane until the end of the 30’s.
This splendid piece is an excellent example of this taste, and it would have pride of place in any silver collection. Excellent piece in an excellent condition.
It is marked in London, and dated for 1919.
