Very symbolic ornament as Europeans thought if you put a devil's head on the tree, and faced it towards the window.

No evil or bad things would enter your home during the Christmas season.

Yes, we have one we put every year on the den tree, facing towards the window, outside.

Am I superstitious?

Not necessarily so.

But why take a chance. I do not want any grinch to steal our Christmas festivities.

Devil's head, heavy eye brows, and arched as you would imagine them to be.

Black eyes, and such detailed black furrow lines on forehead... quite frightening.

Teeth bared, he is enough to frighten off any evil spirits.

Oh, what smarling cheeks... real detail here.

Pushed in nose.

Large prominent ears as well.

If you look at back of his head, it is pumpkin or melon shaped.

Glass ornament blown in Germany and hand painted there in the period between World War I and World War II—the Golden Age of Glass ornaments.

This was a cottage industry, a means for the Germans to make money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. The sons and fathers blew the ornaments. The girls and mom would silver the ornaments inside, and then individually paint the ornaments, and grandma would take to the train station in the spring when the others were back in the fields. Then they went to the sea coast, put on ships, and arrived in New York to be delivered across the country, and we used them to decorate our trees. The origin is Lauscha, Germany.

We are an older couple which are down-sizing, and put up one tree in our den and one in our dining room. These ornaments did not fit on the trees this year, and it seems senseless to keep them in boxes in the back closet. So hopefully new caretakers can be found for these German ornaments being listed tonight.
