1923 Echophone Model A "special" * Radio Shop * Sunnyvale, Ca * Works Great For Sale
Make
sure to check out all of my sales after you've looked at this one.
I'm listing an outstanding assortment of musical, electrical and mechanical
antiques, and I suspect that there will be at least something of
interest to almost everyone. Here's a beautiful, working Echophone Model A battery radio manufactured
in 1923 by the Radio Shop of Sunnyvale, CA -- one of just a few major
radio companies based on the west coast. Like the Echophone Model J that I listed on the other week, this radio was an RM-AWA blue ribbon award winner in the mid 1970's (I'll include the ribbon with the radio).Condition of the panel and chassis is excellent throughout. Bakelite panel
is still deep black and glossy, with engraved lettering that's legible everywhere and no cracks, no
repairs, no filled holes. There's a small bruise, about a 1/4" long, along the top middle edge, just beneath the lid, but you don't see it unless you've got the lid up and are looking down at the top edge. Bakelite control knobs are nearly perfect, and none of
pointers are broken or missing. All controls operate smoothly, and they
stay in place once a station is tuned. Chassis components are all in
excellent condition, and the original Radio Shop transformers are still
good (a rarity, believe me). Panel still slides easily into the cabinet
channel, and the original "C" battery is still in its holder. The cabinet is in good shape, as you can see in the
photos. There's a repaired stress fracture running vertically along the left front corner pillar (see photos) and some mild finish wear consistent with normal use and handling, but
the finish is original, and the cabinet -- even with the repair -- is quite attractive. A tiny chip in the lower left corner, but the molding is otherwise is in nice shape. The original "Echophone Special" tag is still on the underside of the lid.The radio measures approximately 14" wide by 13" deep by 11" tall. Shipping weight, properly packed, will be approximately 29 lb. As noted above, this is a working radio, and
it will be shipped to you with a set of good 01a tubes, ready to "plug
and play." If you want to operate the radio, you'll need a longwire
outdoor aerial (approximately 100 feet in length and 20 feet off the
ground), a good indoor ground connection, and a regulated DC power
supply (I'd recommend an ARBEIII). You'll also need a bit of patience
and (preferably) a bit of prior experience at the controls of a 1920's
battery radio. The radio works well and has
enough output to power pretty much any early horn loudspeaker
to loud levels. Please note that these early sets don't operate like
contemporary radios -- or even antique radios from the 30s and 40s --
and learning how to use them takes time and practice. That said, once
you get the hang of operating one model, it's much easier to figure out
all the others. That's about it. I will packthe radiocarefully and
properly, and Ican assure you thattheradio willshow upat your doorstepin
the samefine condition in whichits leaves mine. I have been shipping antique phonographs and radios
for years, and if you check my response, you'll see that I know how to do it
correctly.Overseas buyers should contact me in advance so that I can confirm my ability to ship the radio to your country, as the package may be too large for export to regions of Asia and Europe.
