1926 Jb Hirsch Foundry Art Deco Antique Vintage Bookend Victorian Lady "curtsey" For Sale
J. B. Hirsch Foundry
Antique - Vintage (1) Bookend
The "Courtsey" according to Collector's Encyclopedia of Bookends Identification and Values by Louis Kuritzky and Charles DeCosta on page 164 which features a taller bookend version than this one, but same figure shape.
This listing is for one bookend of what looks like a Victorian lady holding the sides of her ruffled dress doing a curtsey.I say Victorian lady because she hasruffles around the dress hem and is wearing abonnet hat.
Bookend measures 5.5" tall by 3" by 3". Figure is made from gray metal which has been cold painted red. As you can see the red has rubbed off over the years revealing the gray metal below. The figure's face is also gray metal painted flesh color. Figure sits on a base that appears to be gray stone painted shinny black. The bases hasplaces where the blackpaint has rubbed or chipped off revealing the gray coloring below. Unwrapped bookend measures 2 1/2 pounds so please keep that in mind when paying ship cost. I will wrap well to ship to minimize chance of breakage.
Item does not have maker's mark and no date on it. There is the remains on bottom of old black felt and old paper label.
*** Important: When I bought this one bookend the screw in the bottom of the base which went through into thefoot area of the figure was very loose because I think it was not original. The figure was rocking a lot on the base. I removed the screw and bought atthe store a new screw with insert designed to fill her base so screw fits better, still has a wiggle movement but as long as bookend sits still she is fine. Figure is now attached, new screw through bottom. If you look very closely under her feet you can see a thin line which is the new insert.
Condition of this bookend is as you see in the photos. Photos are considered part of the description. Figure has the rub and scuff, cold paint chippedoff on face and body as shown. I carefully wiped the bookend but it still has some soiling in places difficult to reach so new owner may want to clean again. Black base also has rub and scuff, chips revealing gray coloring of the stone below. Also has the issue with the screw in base mentioned above. I know this bookend had a matching one, it would have been a pair, but I only have this one. You will receive exactly what you see in the photos with this listing.
Buyer will be someone who understands the condition and quality issues mentioned, and is ok with all.
