VINTAGE ORIGINAL VERY RARE!OFFICIAL 1929 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM CHICAGO CUBS at PHILADELPHIA A'S - ROGERS HORNSBY, GABBY HARTNETT, HACK WILSON, LEFTY GROVE, JIMMIE FOXX, AL SIMMONS - A's and CUBS MEET AGAIN - FIRST TIME SINCE 1910!!

DESCRIPTION:

Thissale is for a wonderful, extremely high grade, early, and desirable 1929 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM CHICAGO CUBS at PHILADELPHIA A's. Unique monochrome cover design featuring mascots, managers, and Shibe Park. A's won 4 games to 1 for first World's Championship since 1913, also under HOF Manager Connie Mack. The two teams had last met in 1910 the A’s prevailing 4-1. Teams played this one at tiny SHIBE PARK partly accounting for rarity of these A’s versions. The other factor is thickness of program (huge, 68 pages) without stronger cover paper often causing covers to tear off. Program is clean and neatly pencil scored for Game 3, 10/11.
Game 3 was a strong showing of two defensive teams at their best, a classic pitchers' duel and a "nail-biter." It was also the only Cubs’ win, Guy Bush over George Earnshaw, 3-1 before a full house of only 29,921.
This rare issue is one of the best of the early Series programs with extensive profiles and pictures of A’s and pictures of Cubs team members and management. Provided pictures (below) show the many Hall of Famers from both teams.

A’s won 2 of the 3 games at Shibe Park and both games at Wrigley Field.
The powerful A's, rated one of Baseball's greatest teams, dominated the A.L. leading the Ruth-Gehrig Yankees by 18 games finishing at 104-46. Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Mule Haas, Jimmy Dykes, and others were all in their prime.
Similarly, the 1929 Cubs, under HOF Manager Joe McCarthy, were one of the top teams the franchise fielded, finishing at 98-54, 10.5 games ahead of Pittsburgh. Hack Wilson, KiKi Cuyler, Rogers Hornsby, Gabby Hartnett, Woody English Riggs Stephenson, Charlie Grimm, Guy Bush, Pat Malone, Charlie Root, and others were all at their best.

The experience and strategic moves of manager Mack strongly weighed in the A’s favor.
Game 1 went totally against orthodox strategy perhaps the most ever seen in World Series history. Rather than start Lefty Grove, the best pitcher in the American League, A's manager Connie Mack went with veteran finesse artist Howard Ehmke, who pitched just 55 innings in the regular season. Ehmke fooled the Cubs all day, allowing just one unearned run and striking out 13 to set a Series record. Jimmie Foxx broke the scoreless game in the seventh with a solo homer, and the Athletics came up with two unearned runs in the ninth, making the final score 3-1.

A's starter George Earnshaw got knocked around in Game 2, but Grove came to the rescue with 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Meanwhile, Philly pounded out 12 hits on their way to nine runs, with Foxx and Al Simmons combining for two homers and seven RBIs, and won, 9-3.
The A’s would again repeat as Champions in 1930.
