1930 BRONZE OF A PENGUIN SIGNED BY THE ARTIST BY H WARNEKE GORHAM FOUNDRY NO RES
This listing is for a pretty rare bird..haha..sorry I couldn't help that! The listing is for a bronze penguin by the very well regarded and rarely seen artist Heinz Warneke. The silvered and black enamel figure measures just over 5 inches high at 13 cm.
The bronze is of a charming penguin his wings outstretched and is feet splayed apart. The bronze is signed on one foot by the foundry and is stamped "GORHAM CO. FOUNDERS" and "O.H.E.L." along with the "C" copyright mark. The penguins other foot is signed by the artist and is stamped "H. WARNAKE" and "H.W. 1930". This is for Heinz Warneke 1895-1983. Born in German he immigrated to the United States.
His work may be seen in the Art Institute of Chicago, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Addison Gallery of American Art, The National Cathedral in Washing DC as well as many other museums. He was a member of both he National Academy of Design and the National Sculpture Society along with the Salon des Tuileries.
The bronze is in good condition with darkening and oxidation to the silver and minor black enamel loss. Again, a very charming bronze, by an artist who's works rarely come to market. It is of course guaranteed to be original and by the artist. Please see the many photographs.
