1930s Churro Geometric Navajo Rug Native American Indian Blanket Navaho Textile:
Offered here is a circa 1930s Navaho weaving that measures 4 feet 11 inches long by 3 foot wide or 47” x 36”. It is attributed to the Klagetoh weaving area and is in very good condition. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and smoothly handspun old long staple Churro and Churro cross sheep wool, both weft & warp. Here is a nice old textile with a large central speckled grayish brown diamond formed by 4 oversized corner elements. Centered in the large diamond is a white geometric or anthropomorphic element. .
We obtained this vintage Native American textile from one of three big collections we obtained in Arizona just to offer you here on . It has a smooth, even weft count averaging 26 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch. The selvage cords are all in very good condition with 3 end breaks repaired. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are natural weft loop finished around the outside warp. Three corners are tight, original and in very good to excellent condition. One corner has an L shaped reweave 2” x 1 ½” in the dark brown border and there is a 1” x 1” reweave in the dark brown border on one end. (see photos) One tassel is original & very good, 1 tassel half restored to excellent and 2 restored to excellent. It is fairly clean now & comes from a non-smoking home. Whites should brighten with a cleaning. There is mottling or soiled areas in the white. One side has a very slight fade from one side to the other side. The colors are even on each side it itself. Near one corner is a small area of faint red surface transfer bleed on one side only. Both sides are shown in photos above. Colors are nice in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand carded & blended natural salt & pepper grey, ivory white, black & camel tan. Complete with lazy line and a Spirit Trail or weaver’s pathway, this example of old Native Americana is ready to head your way.
