1930s Kay Kraft Venetian 14 Fret Vintage Acoustic Archtop Project Guitar:
1930s Kay Kraft Venetian Archtop Guitar
*Project* - needs numerous repairs
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GUITAR NO LONGER HAS TUNERS AND WILL NOT ARRIVE FULLY STRUNG AS SOME OF THESE PICTURES INDICATEThis is the third of these very cool guitars that I've unearthed, and it was ironically the most playable and the most pretty, despite needing several repairs and being properly listed as a project guitar. The flamed maple (veneer) on this one is beautiful. She's got plenty of wear, as you can see. There is a chunk of missing binding on the cracked and worn fretboard, which also shows evidence of shrinkage with slightly protruding fret ends. The original pickguard is missing, and I removed the mismatched tuners that were on the guitar when I received it so you can install the replacement set of your choosing. I believe the tailpiece (rusted) to be original, though the bridge looks to be a replacement. The painter's tape on the body is just there to mark the location of the bridge when I received it from an estate sale.
These have the interesting and unique adjustable neck design. I will say the neck angle does need adjustment - in its current position, the action was on the high side. I did get some buzzing on some of the higher frets - probably just one end needing to be re-seated. Original stickers are dingy but still intact inside the guitar. With the ancient strings that were on it when I received it, it had a nice throaty, raspy bark to it. Definitely a cool and unique tone profile.
In summary - in order to be fully playable, I believe the guitar at minimum needs the following repairs:
1. Add set of replacement tuners2. Seat all frets/glue fingerboard cracks (potentially replace fingerboard)3. Adjust neck angle
This cool vintage guitar model regularly sells from $500-1000 in good condition on - here's your chance to pick one up cheap.
I've attempted to describe this guitar as accurately as possible, but don't hesitate to ask for additional pictures or more details. The guitar will be carefully packed and shipped without a case, unless you'd like to make separate arrangements to purchase a modern hard shell case for the guitar from me prior to shipment. On request, I've added some pictures of the bridge and of the screw (intact and operational) on the neck joint inside the guitar.
Also, when looking the guitar over tonight, I noticed a crack on the underside of one of the points that I'd never noticed before. There's also some seam separation on the point. This picture should show it clearly.
