1930s Saddle Blanket Navajo Rug Native American Indian Navaho Textile Churro Nr:
Offered here is a circa 1930 Navaho weaving that measures 2 feet 7 inches long by 2 foot 8 inches wide or 31” x 32” and is in very good condition. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and nicely handspun long staple Churro & Churro cross sheep wool, both weft & warp. Here is a nice old single saddle blanket with Chinle style stars across each end panel and 2 central panels with scattered diamond dash bars. At each corner are diagonal serrated quartering motifs like an old chief blanket. .
We obtained this vintage Native American textile on consignment from a longtime California collector just to offer you here on . It has a nice, even weft count averaging 24 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch. The selvage cords are all in original excellent condition. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords. The corners are: 3 tight, original & excellent and 1 very good with 2 broken warps. The tassels are: 2 half missing and good and 2 missing. It has not been cleaned, is fairly clean now & comes from a non-smoking home. One end has a warp knot finish. About 15 of the warp knots have come untied and there is a little unraveling into the weft. This wouldn’t be too hard to repair. There is a ½” crusty spot or stain near one corner and small place with 4 or 5 broken wefts. Both sides are even in pattern color and shown in photos above. Colors are great in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand carded & hand blended natural grayish brown, ivory white, dark chocolate brown along with hand dyed aniline turkey red. This example of old Native Americana is ready to head your way.
