1935 First Stabber ~ Original Print ~ Route Of The Empire Builder ~ Winold Reiss:
Blackfeet Indian Boy
Empire Builder Poster
Apx. 23" x 16"
This itemis 77 + years old, it is avery nice reproduction of an earlierWinold Reiss portrait of a Blackfeet Indian boy. It is not a reprint of the calender of the Lowell Smith collection that was made in 2010. is an original poster from a 1936 calender.
Winold was commissied for some very important works of art, the majority of his Native American works were comissioned through the railroad.
Native to Germany born 1885, Reiss immigrated to America in 1913 and died in 1953, after which the Blackfeet Indians took his ashes and spread them on the outer edge of Glacier National Park
I've been told that this isa tearofffrom the 1936 calendar, but as you can see it is copyrighted in 1935
colors are bright, very nice condition for age
One small edge tear as can be seen in picture, some rounding where poster has been rolled, some age spots as can be seen in picture
This poster has metal holder at top, it does not have one at the bottom. After looking at the Lowell Smith reproduction I can see there was more to the bottom half where the calender was stapled, this was cut away many years ago.
I also have other Winold Reiss "Blackfeet Indian" plates from the 30's in a packet and a huge amount of railroad memorabila from the same librarywhich belonged to a school teacher back in the 30's
This printis beautiful and in very nice condition, should be professionally cleaned and linen backedfor preservation
