Up for sale is a pre-war Lionel 1688E torpedo locomotive with tender and 3 tinplate passenger cars (O-gauge). The 1688 engine was produced from 1936-1942. I believe this locomotive was produced in 1937, based on the 1688E marking, gunmetal gray color, molded roof hatch above the cab, and drive wheels (4) with 8 spokes. The plate underneath the motor is labeled "LIONEL, JR.". The locomotive measures about 9 1/4" long. The tender is unmarked, but I believe it to be the 1689T model (no whistle). The tender measures about 5 7/8" long (not including couplers).
The tin lithographed passenger cars are also correct for the 1937 year and I believe them to be original to this set. The passenger cars include 2 Lionel Lines 1690 pullman coaches and a 1691 observation car. The cars have the fish belly and red frame. The passenger cars measure about 7 7/8" long (not including couplers). I purchased this Lionel train set at an estate sale several months ago.
Condition of this Lionel 1688E set is GOOD. It appears that the locomotive and tender have been repainted, although someone did a very nice job. One of the red marker lights on the locomotive is missing. I also noticed that the wire to the headlight is not connected. The passenger cars are in good shape with nice paint. They do have some scratches and small areas of paint loss. Three of the 4 door handle bars are missing on the 1691 car. Cosmetically, the set looks great and displays well. The engine is untested (I don't have the capability to run it), but likely runs fine. The drive wheels moved when I tried to turn them. Regardless, you are buying the locomotive "as is" with no returns. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I think you'll be very pleased with this purchase.
If you collect model trains, particularly pre-war Lionel sets, don't miss your opportunity to offer on this offering. My start price of only $9.99 (WITH ) is a ridiculous bargain and intended to spark interest. So offer now while the price is right and check back often. This train set WILL be sold to the highest buyer!
