1937 Original Animation Drawing Walt Disney SNOW WHITE and the Seven Dwarfs
"SATURDAY'S TOYS Presents..." an historic and original 1937animation production drawing for Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (Production No. 2001; Sequence 16a; Scene 1; Drawing 560).
This scene features three ofthe dwarfs (Dopey & Sleepy, paired together at left; and Sneezy at right)approaching Snow White's glass covered coffin. The dwarfs wereanimated to perfectionby Disney Legend FRANK THOMAS, and according to Thomas, he supervised assistant animator Charlie Menges (noted as "CM" at lower right corner)in this particular drawing. Never before in animation history had an audience been moved from laughter... to suspense... to grief... and even tears. In this touching moment, the entire forest comes to pay their respects to Snow White. The other dwarfs (Happy, Doc, Grumpy, and Bashful; also animated by Thomas), the animals (animated by James Algar) and Snow White (animated by Hamilton Luske) were added to the scene with separate drawings and were layered into the final production.
This gentle moment is beautifully framed (24" x 19"; in approx. 1995) with subdued mat coloringand the drawing (15" x 11")is tipped into place to allow for full viewing. Within this animation sequence (16a), of approx. 800 drawings created for Scene 1, this is drawing #560, as noted at bottom right; and as checked (or possibly adding light pencil coloring?)by studio employee, "BC" (unknown). The number "2077" at the bottom left was placed by Courvoisier Gallery along with the "Walt Disney Productions" stamp (in blue) and the "1937 Walt Disney Prod" embossed imprint; indicating that the drawing was actually sold in the years following initial production of the film.
The drawing was previously folded with four light creasesto the drawing. Still, it displays quite nicely and is among the most eagerly sought art in today's market; that of original production art from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."
The animation draft from this scene; and theexact match of the image as it appeared on-screen in the film... arealso pictured (for illustration only; not included with sale).
Another matching drawing and cel from this scene is now displayed on displayat the Walt Disney Family Museum at the Presidio of San Francisco and is featured in their exhibit catalog. This is the museum's first major art exhibition and it celebratesthe film's 75th Anniversary: "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of a Classic." The exhibit will be on display thru April 14, 2013 and comes with the highest recommendation of SaturdaysToys.com.
