First Series

"Mercury Midget"

As early as1937, Tom, Russell, and Harris Dooling began building tether racers using the gas engines from the model airplanes of the day.

Their cars immediately attracted attention and in 1939 the Doolings began to manufacture their very first "series" production tether car called the "Mercury Midget".

It was well built with a strong cast aluminum frame, front drive gearbox, and a cast rear axle assembly located by radius rods. Quality wheels and tires were included. Lastly a bit of sheet metal was provided for the hood, cowl & cockpit section. Pine or balsa wood was provided for the tailpiece. The kit was $19.50 and the cars easily found customers as the hobby burgeoned.

Which brings us to this great survivor.

At the age of 74, this fabulous Dooling Series I tether car has had a sensational career. The owner/racer chose to hand hammer the entire body out of aluminum and he fitted the car with a potent "Berg" conversion Dennymite .57 sparkignitionengine.

Reginald Denny, the noted Hollywood actor was an avid model aviation enthusiast and he designed and sold a superior model gas engine. Hence, the name Dennymite. Denny was also the Dooling Brothers distributor for their racing cars.

At some point an engine tuner named Berg took things a step further and offered very effective hop up modifications for the Dennymite engines. The engine in this car is the only "full house" Berg engine I've ever seen, having the tuned intake, modified cylinder, bypass, and the high compression head. The engine and the full drive train turn through smoothly with very good compression.

This car is truly one of the most remarkable tether racing survivors I have ever seen. Though the wheels and tires remain soft and pliable, note the utter lack of tire tread. The car presents an engaging, marvelous patina.
