1939 Vatican Postcard: Sede Vacante 1939, Cancelled Stamps--beautiful 2/20/39:
Beautiful card, postmarked 2/20/39.
This piece was "current" for just a short window of time, after the death of Pope Pius XI on February 10th.
The cardinals of the Catholic Church met in the papal conclave of 1939--on March 1st.
This was the shortest such meeting of the twentieth century. They elected the man that would become Pius XII the following day.
Very nice illustration of the former pope. With an impression of his signature in cursive, above the title: "Sede Vacante, 1939." (Vacant Seat, 1939).
There are five beautiful Vatican City stamps with the dated postmark on the front side.
Piece is is nice vintage condition. Very slight rounding of corners. Clean backside. (pm ink bleed-through is original to time it was stamped).
Very nice card. Interesting timing.
Historically important for the church and in the history of all of Europe, to come, with WW II in the air.
