VINTAGE ORIGINALRARE! OFFICIAL 1939 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM CINCINNATI REDS at NEW YORK YANKEES – YANKS SWEEP, LOU GEHRIG TRIBUTE COVER!!

DESCRIPTION:

This sale is for a magnificent, beautiful and desirable 1939 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM CINCINNATI REDS at NEW YORK YANKEES. One of the most distinctive and popular of all World Series Programs, cover tribute portrait to Lou Gehrig, honorary Yankees Captain at his last World Series. His bio is also inside with other players (more later). YANKEES won 4 games to 0 for second straight Series sweep and fourth win in a row. Teams played this one at Yankee Stadium. From afamous Series, program is clean and unscored, with notation on Yankees grid it's for "2nd Game, Thurs Oct. 5" (pictured). In this game, Monte Pearson fired a 2 hitter in beating Bucky Walters 4-0 before 59,791 (more later).
This is a very special, classic, and nostalgic piece of memorabilia. Rarely, if ever, does a World Series program feature an individual player. This original and classic 1939 New York Yankees World Series program features their immortal captain Lou Gehrig, who just earlier that season was stricken with the disease which would bear his name. This was the first time a Yankees player had ever appeared on a World Series program cover. On May 2 of that year, Lou Gehrig, the "Iron Horse", pulled himself out of the lineup after experiencing failing health and an accompanying decline in skills after 2,130 consecutive games. From Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, this wonderful program has 32 great pages featuring our National Pastime in its heyday, loaded with info and stats on the Yankees, the Cincinnati Reds, and of course the immortal Lou Gehrig. Gehrig suited up and was in the dugout for his last Yankees appearance. Red's catcher Willard Hershberger is also pictured. Suffering from depression, he would commit suicide during the 1940 season.
In Game 2, Yankees right-hander Monte Pearson posted one of the all-time great World Series starts. After seven innings, Pearson owned a 4-0 lead and was working on a no-hitter. Ernie Lombardi broke up the no-hit offer with a clean single in the eighth, and Billy Werber collected a base hit in the ninth, but Pearson finished with a two-hit, one-walk shutout, striking out eight. Babe Dahlgren, Gehrig's replacement, added a homer in this game. Also memorialized is Yankees' owner Col. Jacob Ruppert who passed away earlier in the year.
With the four-game sweep, the Yankees had won 16 of the last 19 World Series games played. ... The Yanks' Charlie Keller led all regulars with a .438 batting average.
