The Bumper is also known as the Tankard, was one of Dunhill’s creation shortly after World War II. According to Davide Blei and Luciano Bottoni in their book; “The Dunhill Petrol Lighter” it was first seen in 1949. The lighter uses innovative wheel acceleration method, whereby it gets a great spark with little effort. The pressure of closing the top actually cocks the trigger that is released when the top is opened next time! (Incidentally, this old idea has been re-invented in the new high bred electric cars- when one breaks the vehicle the inertia is accumulated and used to re-generate electricity to be used later to go!) How did we get to cars from lighters? Oh well.
This one is the rarer version with the internal cover, to hide the mechanism. It stands nearly 4 inches tall and this beauty is practically perfect, it shows very few lights and limited handling, with some minute, easy to overlook markings on one side – please see pictures provided. It is free of any dents or dings, showing that it has not been mishandled or dropped. Because of its high gloss shiny finish and curved body, it was very difficult to take proper pictures. The dark spots are a reflection of my camera. It is also in perfect working order with a new flint that has been installed for your convenience.
