Description

Up for sale is a very nice Wahl-Eversharp Skyline Fountain Pen with a Dubonnet Red Barrel, Cap, Section and Derby. This Skyline has been fully serviced and is in fine working condition.

I really like Skyline fountain pens. A very unique design and well made. Wahl-Eversharp introduced the Skyline in 1941. Strikingly modern in appearance, the Skyline (originally called the Skyliner) was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, who also streamlined the steam locomotives of the New York Central Railroad’s famed 20th Century Limited. You do not need a very sharp eye to detect a strong resemblance between the locomotive and the Skylines!

I took the pen apart, including removing the nib and feed from the section and cleaned everything ultrasonically, and then polished it by hand. I installed a new Skyline specific ink sac for maximum fill. Over-all length capped is just shy of 5 1/4 inches, and 5 3/4 inches with the cap posted, so this is a Standard Size Skyline. Typically, Demis are about 4 3/4 inches capped and Execs are about 5 1/2 inches capped.

The derby looks good - very clean. The barrel has the usual minor scratches from normal use but no bad scratches, dings or teeth marks. The cap looks really nice - just a small \'pot hole\' where the clip has rubbed on the cap over the years.

When Wahl-Eversharp introduced the Skyline they changed the material from Celluloid to Polystyrene. The Polystyrene could be molded to a final size, whereas the Celluloid needed extra manufacturing steps to get it to the proper size. Although the Polystyrene was less expensive to manufacture, there have been problems over the years with brittleness (I\'ve cracked many barrels when re-installing or removing the section), shrinkage, and color shift. The Dubonnet Red often looks black (especially in pictures), but on this pen the derby, barrel, cap and section are a fairly good match, with the section being the darkest, but only a little bit darker.

The over-the-top clip looks good; no visible dents, blemishes or brassing. The upper cap band shows no brassing, dents or blemishes either. The lower cap band looks equally as good. The filling lever appears to be brass free - this is not common. There is almost always some brassing on the filling lever caused by the cap rubbing on it from posting numerous times over the years. This Skyline is in superb condition for a fountain pen about 70 years old!

On the upper cap ring there is an imprint: \'EVERSHARP SKYLINE PAT. MADE IN U.S.A.\' Also, if you look at the clip where it intersects the upper cap ring, you\'ll notice two \'Check Marks\'. This was Eversharp\'s indication of a Lifetime Warranty, like Sheaffer\'s White Dot, or Parker\'s Blue Diamond on the clip.

The 14K Solid Gold Banner Nib looks good visually, actually really good! I can see some light surface scratches near the base of the nib, but only if I use a 10X loupe. Wahl-Eversharp had a reputation for making excellent nibs of varying line widths and flex. This nib is very clean and a very smooth writer. I\'d judge it to be about a \'F\' point, very smooth and quite stiff. Tine alignment looks excellent - near perfect!

This is an extremely nice example of a vintage Dubonnet Red Eversharp Skyline Fountain Pen from the 1940\'s. This Skyline would make a great daily writer or a nice addition to your Skyline collection.
