Description

Up for sale is a very nice Eversharp Skyline Fountain Pen in Marine Green with a 1/10 14K Y. G. F. (Yellow Gold-Filled) Cap. The barrel and section match quite nicely, while the derby is actually black. Sometimes the green can look black, but on this pen the derby actually is black.

I really like Skyline fountain pens. A very unique design and well made. The pen was introduced in 1941 by the Wahl-Eversharp company. Strikingly modern in appearance, the Skyline (originally called the Skyliner) was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, who also streamlined the steam locomotives of the New York Central Railroad’s famed 20th Century Limited. You do not need a very sharp eye to detect a strong resemblance between the locomotive and the Skylines!

I took the pen apart and cleaned everything ultrasonically and then by hand. I even knocked the nib and feed out of the section. I installed a new Skyline specific tapered ink sac for maximum fill. Over-all length capped is right at 5 1/8 inches, and about 5 1/2 inches with the cap posted, so this is the Standard size Skyline. The Demi is shorter and the Executive is longer than the Standard.

The derby looks good - I don\'t see any scratches or blemishes at all. The barrel and section have the usual minor micro wear scratches but no gouges, cracks, or teeth marks. The cap is in really nice condition - very nice except for some brassing near the edge of the cap opening on the back side. I\'ve not seen this type of brassing before. The cap is 1/10 14K Y. G. F. (Yellow Gold Filled). It really cleaned up nicely.

The over-the-top clip looks exceptional - no dents, dings or brassing; none, it is exceptionally clean. The filling lever shows a bit of brassing at the high point on the edges. There is almost always some brassing on the high point of the lever caused by the cap being posted numerous times over the years. The cap rubs on the filling lever, thus the wear. This Skyline is in very good condition for a fountain pen about 70 years old! This would be a nice addition to a collection, yet it has a very smooth writing 14K nib, quite nice for everyday writing.

On the upper cap ring there is an imprint: \'EVERSHARP SKYLINE PAT. MADE IN U.S.A.\' Also, if you look at the clip where it intersects the upper cap ring, you\'ll notice two \'Check Marks\'. This was Eversharp\'s indication of a Lifetime Warranty, like Sheaffer\'s White Dot, or Parker\'s Blue Diamond on the clip.

The 14K Solid Gold Banner nib looks great - just surface micro scratches that are just not visible with the naked eye - I had to use a 10X loupe to see them and they are very tiny and there aren\'t many of them. Eversharp had a reputation for making excellent nibs of varying line widths and flex. This nib is exceptionally clean. I\'d judge it to be about a \'M\' point with standard writing pressure, very smooth with a fair amount of flex - up to about a \'BB\'. A very good writer with superb tine alignment. I dipped the pen to create the writing sample and it wrote wet. My experience is that once filled with ink, it won\'t write quite as wet, but with a flexy nib you need good ink flow to prevent skipping.

This is a wonderful example of a vintage Eversharp Skyline Demi Fountain Pen from the 1940\'s. I\'m especially fond of the Marine Green color. This Skyline would make a great daily writer or a good addition to your Skyline collection.
