1941 FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT Unprecedented THIRD TERM INAUGURATION Medal, NICE

This is a very nice Medal that was struck to Celebrate a unique event in American History. It marks the Third Inauguration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. No other President, before or since, has ever been elected to a third term in office.

The obverse was designed by the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Ray Sinnock. He also designed the Roosevelt Dime we still use today and the Franklin Half Dollar. I could not find who designed the reverse, but it was copyrighted by J. Hood of Philadelphia.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was arguably the Most Important Person in the Twentieth Century. When he first came to office on March 4, 1933 the United States was in the depths of the worst depression it had ever experienced. He used radical innovative methods, that made the Republicans scream, and new Government Programs to get our economy back on track and succeeded in bringing America back from near ruin. More below...

Weight: 9.87 Gram, 28.5 Millimeter or 1 & 1/8 Inch. White Metal.

Obverse: PRESIDENT • OF • THE • UNITED STATES • FRANKLIN • DELANO • ROOSEVELT • Bust of FDR right.

He did not really want to run for his third term, he was ready to retire and enjoy the rest of his life. But he saw the coming storm in Europe and the rise of the Dictators Hitler and Mussolini. He knew that America was not ready and that the threat was real and growing. He also knew that the United States was thoroughly isolationist in sentiment and would refuse to fight to "Save" Europe.

He proceeded to slowly guide American Opinion while helping the Democracies as much as he could in the face of official "Neutralism". When World War II actually started in Europe the people of the United States were still not ready to jump in and Roosevelt found new ways to support the Allies. His "Lend Lease" program ("When your neighbor's hose is on fire, you lend him a hose and don't insist on immediate payment") is what saved Britain, France and Russia from near certain defeat. Reverse: REELECTED FOR A THIRD TERM NOV. 5. 1940 • INAUGURATED JAN. 20. 1841 • CHAMPION OF NATIONAL DEFENSE • Small ©J. HOOD • PHILA. • The United States Capitol Building.

After Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt's famous friendship with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his willingness to work with Russia's Premier Joseph Stalin gave the United States enough time to truly become "The Arsenal of Democracy" that she needed to be in order to defeat the worst tyrannies the world has ever seen.

Sadly, Roosevelt did not live to see the end, dying on April 12, 1945. But he knew he had succeeded and it was only a matter of time before both Germany and Japan would be completely defeated. Hitler rejoiced upon hearing the news of Roosevelt's death, but not for long. He got to shoot himself in the head in the ruins of Russian occupied Berlin on April 30.

The Medal: A pleasing, presentable example of a very historic medal. It has seen some handling over the years and shows light wear like someone carried it as a pocket piece for a short time. It also has some marks, stains and a couple of small rim dings. But it is totally original and has never been cleaned, a very nice piece overall. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
