1942 Gibson A-00 A Style Wartime Carved Top Vintage Mandolin Sunburst W/ohsc:
Up for sale, a 1942 Gibson A-00 Carved Top Mandolin in excellent condition. This wartime A style mandolin was produced during the era of the "girls of Kalamazoo" when Gibson hired many women to produce their instruments, as the majority of Gibson's male factory workers had enlisted in America's armed forces. The attention to detail and craftsmanship of the instruments produced during that era is legendary and many argue the best and shortest lived era of Gibson construction. The A-00 has the classic carved top Gibson sound, with incredible volume and chop. This mandolin has a powerful, rich voice that really shines for both studio and live work, definitely holding its own in larger ensembles. With a tone that sits somewhere between Gibson's famed F style mandolins and their earlier oval soundhole models, the A-00 is easily one of the best values in the vintage Gibson mandolin family. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard features original fretwire and pearl dot inlay. The frets show only light wear in the first position and almost no wear up the neck with plenty of height left. The only noticeable wear on the neck is some light flaking of the finish along the bass side of the fretboard from years of consistent play (seen in photo #6). The headstock sports original tuning machines with the stock buttons that show no signs of shrinkage or cracking. All of the tuners work quite well and the face of the headstock displays the silkscreened "Gibson" logo seen on many of the guitars of the era.The body features a carved spruce top with traditional Gibson sunburst finish, and maple back and sides, all of which are in excellent condition. The original finish shows some very tasteful light checking and only one small professionally repaired crack on the center seam of the back, which has been lightly oversprayed. There is also one small crack that has also been addressed that extends slightly from the treble side F hole. Neither crack poses a structural issue and both are fully repaired, stable and to be expected with a Gibson of this vintage. The binding on the back also shows some very slight shrinkage near the rear strap button (very common on these instruments), but is stable and not detrimental to the instrument in any way! The hand carved rosewood bridge is of a similar era as the instrument, but likely not original, although it intonates well and definitely looks the part. The top shows moderate wear in the pick path from honest playwear and the sunburst finish has a rich, smooth fade from yellow to deep brown. The original celluloid pickguard is included, although it is not currently installed as it has deteriorated slightly as photo #12 shows. The pickguard bracket is original as well.Overall, this A-00 is in excellent condition and has been very well cared for and maintained over the last 70+ years. A classic example of 1940s wartime Gibson craftsmanship! The original hardshell case is included. Please check out our shop "Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar" on the web, and feel free to call us directly with any questions at 206.818.9329.
