This rare bird is a players dream. The tone of these old J-45's are second to none. It makes for a wonderful recording tool or an incredible live acoustic. This one has had a K&K Pure Western pickup system installed. The sound whether plugged-in or natural is very warm and fat. The J45 guitar in general, is probably Gibson's most popular acoustic guitar ever made. The top of this one has been refinished in the past. Whoever did it, was a professional. The color and fade looks fantastic. Someone did however try to hide some pretty deep pick grooves on the front with wood filler. When we got the guitar we had our luthier fill in an old jack hole on the side of the lower bout. We also had him check the stability of every repaired crack that's been done in the past. It's got a clean bill of health. This one is ready for years of enjoyment!
The action is a little high. The strings are approximately 3/16" off the fretboard at the 12th fret. There's not much saddle left. If you're playing in the cowboy chord area it feels great! The frets are in excellent shape and there's no fret buzz. To our knowledge it's never had a neck reset.
Here are a few other things we know about it:
-Refinished top, oversprayed back and sides
-Multiple repaired cracks (See pictures)
-Non-original bridge pins
-Non-original pick guard
-In 1946 Gibson did not assign factory order numbers to guitars (FON). This one does not have one inside on the neck block.
Not very many of these guitars survived over the years. As you can see this one certainly has it's battle scars but it's still full of life. It comes housed in a non-original hard shell case. It's got a new set of D'Addario strings on it and it sings.
