I'm selling a tin friction Breakaway Racer and original box and inserts made in Japan by an unknown manufacturer. The car measures 10 1/2 inches or 27 centimeters long and it comes complete with its original box.

The car is complete and all original with the exception of a hard to find paint touch up on the back blue fin of the racer. The racer is in excellent condition and the original box is in very good shape. It still has its original inserts. The litho is sharp and clear and the paint and coloring is glossy. The chrome trim is bright and shiny, The racer is designed to break apart when it hits an object. It does work quite well, the wheel really do go flying when they fly off ( this could be the ultimate toy source for the 1950's/60's Mom saying "you'll put your eye out!!") The front wheels are spring loaded and the tires are put on the race car by pushing them in and kind of giving them a twist. The left wheel clamps on beautifully but I had some problems getting the right wheel to catch. I was assured by the original owner that it worked fine and that there is a trick to getting the wheels on that you had to get used to. I am not sure but I am not the most mechanical person in the world, and for that reason I am selling the toy "as is". There might be a problem with the right wheel, I honestly cannot tell. It certainly is a very interesting and unusual race car toy and it is in great shape. The sixth photo shows the car and box as pictured on page 105 of the terrific book Elmer's Price Guide to Toys Volume One.
