FRANK R. PAUL \"SCIENCE FICTION PLUS\" ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONAn original illustration by artist FRANK R. PAUL (American, 1884-1963) for the interior of the digest publication \"Science-Fiction Plus\" (1952–53, eight issues). The illustration medium is gouache and ink on illustration board. Condition is excellent with rich darks and lights, minor paper toning along edges, extreme edges are slightly frayed and three pieces of black tape are vertically placed on the left and right edges of the image. Overall size with margins measures 20 x 15 inches. Provenence: the Jerry Weist Collection sold by Heritage sales.

A discovery of editor Hugo Gernsback (himself an immigrant from Luxembourg), Frank R. Paul was influential in defining what both cover art and interior illustrations in the nascent science fiction pulps of the 1920s looked like. Paul illustrated the cover of Gernsback’s own novel, Ralph 124C 41+: A Romance of the Year 2660 (The Stratford Company, 1925), originally a 1911–1912 serial.[5] He painted 38 covers for Amazing Stories from April 1926 to June 1929 and seven for the Amazing Stories Annual and Quarterly; with several dozen additional issues featuring his art on the back cover (May 1939 to July 1946), and several issues from April 1961 to September 1968 featuring new or reproduced art. After Gernsback lost control of Amazing Stories in 1929, Paul followed him to the Wonder Stories magazines and associated quarterlies, which published 103 of his color covers from June 1929 to April 1936. Paul also painted covers for Planet Stories, Superworld Comics, Science Fiction magazine, and the first issue (October–November 1939) of Marvel Comics. The latter featured the debuts of Human Torch and Sub-Mariner, and good copies sell at sale for twenty to thirty thousand dollars. All told, his magazine covers exceed 220. Paul created hundreds of interior illustrations from no later than 1920.

Jerry Weist (1950-2011) was known for grading, cataloging, writing historical articles, identifying restoration on comics, distinguishing original artwork from fakes, making finds that became “pedigree” comics collections — and a wider range of experience with the comic book and comic art mediums than many other professionals. He is the author of Bradbury: Illustrated Life, a Journey to Far Metaphor (William Morrow, 2002), Original Comic Art: Identification and Price Guide (The confident collector) (Avon 1992), 100 Greatest Comic Books (Whitman 2004), Frank R. Paul: Father of Science Fiction Art (with Stephen D. Korshak and Roger Hill) (Book Sales 2010), and The Comic Art Price Guide (Krause 2000) and the second updated edition (Arcturian 2000). Prior to his death, he reportedly completed the third edition of The Comic Art Price Guide. !!!
