1964 Vintage Menu Trader Vic's In The Statler-hilton Washington D.c. Tiki Bar For Sale
A vintage menu from the fabled TRADER VIC'Slocated in the Washington D.C. STATLER-HILTON HOTEL. The menu copyright date is 1961, but the small code at the back indicates late 1964. While the storied menu items may not have changed, prices had to be adjusted for inflation. Imagine how exotic and glamourous this venue seemed in the early Sixties, especially to the out-of-towner. And this huge, extensive menu, with bold period graphics, must have taken his or her breath away. And so, I imagine, did the prices; Trader Vic's was not a cheap place to eat. To start, and keeping with the South Pacific vibe, a diner could order PO-PO, CHO-CHO, or CRAB RANGOON for $1.35, BONGO BONGO SOUP, at 85 cents, was "Cream of Pureed Oysters". The really adventurous might opt for MALAYAN TIDBITS, described as "Rumaki, Cheese Balls, & Curry Puffs", which cost all of $2.15. The main courses were very various, but tended towards the exotic. Sure, you could insist upon pedestrian entrees like RED SNAPPER, ENGLISH STYLE ($3.65) or CHATEAUBRIAND ($5.80), but who would, when enticing options like MIXED GRILL CALCUTTA STYLE ($4.95), KIDNEYS MARTINIQUE FLAMBE ($3.35), or SUSU SHRIMP CURRY ($3.85) were available? In addition, there were two full pages of PAKE or CHINESE DISHES. The full page of dessert options includes the classics of the period CHERRIES JUBILEE ($1.75), CAMEMBERT CHEESE (.85), and SANKA (.25), but leans towards the tropical TAHITIAN ICE CREAM ($1.25), FRIED BANANAS WITH MALACCA SAUCE (.85) and PEESANG GORENG JAVANESE (which, at $1.10, I will leave to your imagination). Measuring a whopping 9 5/8" wide and 15 3/4" tall, this bifold cardboard menu features eight interior pages with fabulous graphic headers. It is is very good shape with no soiling, handwriting or tears. There are several very light and very minor marks; and one interior page has separated at the staples, but is not damaged. A fun period piece! I SHIP WITHIN ONE BUSINESS DAY OF RECEIVING YOUR CLEARED PAYMENT.
