1965 - Ny Newspaper - Floyd Patterson Wins Boxing Decision Over George Chuvalo:
Item for sale is the original February 2nd, 1965, edition of the New York Daily News newspaper; the lead story of the day was from the sporting world, where Heavyweights Floyd Patterson and rugged Canadian, George Chuvalo had squared off at New York's Madison square garden. Floyd Patterson, had lost his title to the feared, Sonny Liston, who had humiliated him in the ring in 1962. The beating was so bad that Patterson had taken up to wearing a disguise in public. But, that was then and this was now, Patterson would put his (41-4) record on the line against the big Canadian, Chuvalo, (29-8-2) who had 10 pounds on Patterson. The speedy Patterson would battle with the bulkier, Chuvalo, for 12 rounds. Chuvalo, would go to the body, smahing at Patterson's ribcage. Patterson would counter with lightning fast combinations. Patterson would be shaken in both the 4th and 6th rounds, and in the 10th, Chuvalo, would come close to knocking Patterson down. Patterson, with his superior hand speed would outpoint the slower Chuvalo in the 11th and 12th rounds, winning the fight by unanimous decision. Patterson, would get a shot at the title holder, Muhammad Ali, the following November. But, Ali, was young and fast too; he would easily handle the challenger, stopping him in 12 rounds, in a basically one sided fight. This paper is fully described above. It is original and complete at 52 pages and has never been folded. Both the front page and back are displayable. The front page has old water stains that have basically faded into the yellow aging process, and add to the overall aesthetic quality of the newspaper. Once again this is a great item, for the boxing enthusiast. It paints a portrait of when the Heavyweight division was transitioning, to that special but brief period in the 70's, which saw so many talented heavyweights.
