1968 Mickey Mantle Last Home Run #536 Game Used Ticket Stub Red Sox @ Yankees:
If you collect ticket stubs like me, you have probably asked yourself on more than one occasion, why can't I find a 9/20/68 Red Sox at Yankees ticket stub featuring the final career HR (#536) of the legendary Mickey Mantle. I can find his last game ticket stub, his debut, his last hit, his last game at Yankee Stadium, his 500th HR, the list goes on and on..... but no last home run tickets from 9/20/68! It's frustrating. Well, the answer is simple enough. The 9/20/68 game was never originally scheduled to be played. It was an off day for both the Yankees and Red Sox. However, a rain out on 7/24/68 forced the two teams into action on this day. Thus, as stated on this 7/24/68 ticket, "In the event of a postponement, this coupon will admit the holder to the game numbered hereon." The game numbered hereon is game #57, originally scheduled for 7/24/68 but actually played on 9/20/68. No 9/20/68 Yankees tickets were ever factory printed because no game was ever scheduled for this date. The best you are going to do is this 7/24/68 ticket for game #57 which was made up on 9/20/68. (It should be noted that three ultra rare "hand stamped" 9/20/68 ticket stubs are known to exist, one is slabbed by psa, one is raw and was recently offered on and one is in a framed Mantle ticket display that sold at sotheby's in 2008 for $9K. Other than those 3 tickets, this is the only Mantle #536 ticket in existence and the ONLY one not stamped by hand)
Because of the circumstances surrounding this historic game, this ticket has become the rarest Mantle milestone ticket in existence and its value cannot be understated. With only (4) known examples including this one, it is at least twice as rare as Mantle debut tickets that have sold for as much as $8295. (A few of which that have sold in the last 13 years are shown below) $6739.70-- $4112.50----2012This ticket stub from 7/24/68 (Yankees scheduled home game #57) was rained out and later used for the game #57 makeup date, played 9/20/68, when Mickey Mantle launched his 536th and final home run! Game also featured Mickey's 344th and last career double. None of the 15,737 in attendance that day realized they had just witnessed the end of a legacy. Mantle would not announce his retirement until Spring Training 1969. No one would have thought to keep the ticket stub for a souvenir--just another home run in the long and storied home run of The Commerce Comet who still had another 8 games to play in 1968 alone. (The game itself was meaningless as the Detroit Tigers had already clinched the AL pennant) This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a ticket stub from this historic game. This is also a rare $4.00 lower box ticket, the most expensive seat in Yankee Stadium at that time! The lucky fan who held this ticket sat just behind home plate as Mantle launched his final home run! This ticket could NOT have been used at other game than the 9/20/68 contest as the Yankees changed the verbage on their tickets in 1950 to make rain out tickets good ONLY for the specific makeup game and not for "any other game this season" which had previously been the norm prior to the 1950 season.
