DESCRIPTION

This is a fine, and relatively rare, solid silver thimble made by James Swann and Son of Hylton Street, Birmingham. It was first issued in 1973 by Westminster Abbey to commemorate the wedding of Princess Anne to Captain Mark Phillips on 14th November of that year. The thimble has traditional punched dot / honeycomb decoration to the top and upper part of the shaft but below this is a magnificent, cast and applied border featuring a representation of Westminster Abbey and the coat of Arms of Westminster Abbey with two English roses/leaves between them. Finally, there is a plain, contrasting band at the rim which carries the hallmarks.

The maker’s mark is JS&S is good and clear, however, the hallmarks are very rubbed. The Anchor assay mark for Birmingham is discernible and from the shape of the stamp around it, dates the thimble to the 1973 rather than 1992, when it was apparently re-issued for Princess Ann’s second wedding to Commander Timothy Laurence. The size marked is 5.

Now 40 years old, this is an unusual and genuine quality item for collectors of thimbles or articles related to Royalty.

CONDITION

Excellent. There are no holes, dents or splits and the base is circular.
