DESCRIPTION

This is a fine quality, enamel on solid silver thimble by James Swann & Son of Hylton Street, Birmingham. The enamel work features exquisite and colourful hand painted violets to the front and a quotation from Shakespeare on the reverse. The line by William Shakespeare reads “He who goes a Mothering finds violets in the lane”. The original English usage of Mothering Sunday (the one day a year when you were freed from yourwork as a servant, labourer, apprentice etc.to visit your mother) has been replaced in more recent years by the American term Mother’s Day.

The hallmarks are located on the inside top of the thimble. They are tiny and difficult to see (also a very small amount of residue from the enamelling process does not help) but with a good light and a jeweller’s loupe of 30x magnification it is possible to see the maker’s mark (JS&S), Lion Passant, Anchor (Birmingham assay) and date letter C for 1977.

Overall, this thimble is relatively rare as well as being a superb example of workmanship and a delight to display. Ideal for collectors themselves or as a gift for a mother who collects thimbles!

CONDITION

Excellent condition with no chips or cracks to the enamel and no dents, splits or holes to the silver.
