1982 Northwest Coast Haida Indian Eagle Argillite Plate Platter By Gary Minaker

This beautiful and unique Eagle carving has been in our family for years.A lovely thick piece of argillite with fine cross hatching over the background and a beautiful Eagle looking statuesque in the forefront. The tips of the wings and tail feathers show beautiful detail work. It is truly a one of a kind and very special example of Gary Minaker-Russ' early work. The back is signed and says: Eagle

4/82It measures 6" x 4" and just slightly under 1" tall. Weighs in at 1lb 1.5oz. This piece has what looks like surface scratches on the back but they have been there as long as I can remember. I think it is just part of stone. There is a very small chip in part of the left wing. A small scratch chip and surface scratch above the chest detail. Please look at the pictures carefully and ask any questions you have. I have tried to capture all areas of interest and would be happy to send you more if desired. Gary was born into the Eagle clan of Masset, Queen Charlotte Islands, in 1958, he was fifth child of nine born to Harold Minaker and Elanor Russ. He was taught to carve at age 14 by his brother Ed and sister-in-law Fay, Gary apprenticed under them for a number of years while learning the stories, forms and tools that are essential to his craft. While working as a logger and fisherman, Gary continued his studies while refining his skill with Chisels, until 1980 when he devoted himself fully to his art.Taking his inspiration from such past masters as Charles Edenshaw and Issac Chapman, Gary though a contemporary First Nations artist carves traditionally in both form and content, leaving his work unpolished in the traditional way – with a tool finished grey/black matte surface. Each carving is an original in design and reflective of both Gary’s spiritual and cultural heritage, while showing a clear understanding of three dimensional sculptures that Haida artisans are renowned for.I will ship via priority mail with insurance unless local pick up is an option for you. International shipping is available. Please contact me with specific location so I can get you a quote.
