The 1992 P Close AM Lincoln Cent is a transitional variety of the Lincoln Cent series. Beginning in 1993, the United States Mint sharpened certain details of the reverse design of the coin. Most noticeably, the letters “AM” from “AMERICA” were placed close together. A small number of 1992 Lincoln Cents were apparently struck with the new reverse die.
The “Close AM” variety can be identified by the lack of space between the letters. Additionally, the designer’s initial “FG” will be further away from the Memorial building. For the “Wide AM” version, the letters will have a visible space between and the initials “FG” will appear close to the building.
Until 1992, both proof and business strike Lincoln cents were made using the same type of reverse die all with a Wide AM. In 1992 the mint created a new reverse with a Close AM that seems to be intended for use starting with a with 1993 cents. All 1993 cents, proof and business strikes, have a Close AM reverse. However, 1992 business strike cents have been found with Close AM reverses. Close AM's are considered extremely rare. .Despite over 9 billion 1992 Lincoln cents being struck for circulation from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mint combined, so far, there are only 5 examples of the 1992-P Close AM Lincoln Cents known, making it truly scarce.
