Description....For your consideration here is a beautiful old 19c Chinese carved sandalwood picture frame of the up most quality which features dragons, phoenix, magpies, bats, fish and in the opening there is a group of four figures painted in gouache on rice paper. This antique frame was produced in Canton, China some time around c1870 for export to the west. I have had many of these in various sizes and subject matter and even though this is not a large frame it is one of the better ones I have had and in excellent condition. The top shows two very well done dragons dueling over the flaming pearl of wisdom which is at the very top center between the ends of their tails and half way down are phoenix birds to each side and then the bottom shows magpies or similar birds facing off bats and under the frame is a pair of fish and there is more as you look. The color has turned to a lovely medium brown with a good surface patina as this frame was never stained, oiled or waxed being totally natural The back at one time did perhaps have a stand so it could sit on a desk or similar, but now it is being hung on the wall and the stands can be easily put back at any frame shop.
Condition....Excellent with only 1 or 2 very small tips of wood missing and then the stander to the back otherwise it is almost perfect. The center area is held by a couple of small screws but can be done much better as this is a wonderful old frame and the winner will be very pleased.
Sizes,,,Height 14\" x Width 10\" x Thickness 5/8\", The center hole is Height 5-5/8\" x Width 3-5/8\" The back area which is recessed for a photo or painting is 4-1/4 wide x 6-1/2\" high.
