19thc Antique Persian - Qajar - Bull Head Mace No Shamshir Tulwar Wootz :
19th Century Persian Bull Mace 'Gorz' from the Qajar Period
Overall length:29.5in (752mm)Reference: 10343
A ceremonial Persian Bull Head mace from the Qajar period (late 19th Century).
Of hollow steel construction, the tubular haft has a bulbous end, and is securely mounted with a large Bull or Cow head, decorated with silver decoration (worn). Large protruding ears, and long curved horns. A shaped smiling mouth, with large pierced nostrils.
A little known fact about these mace is that they whistle when swung in the air. This is caused by fast moving air rushing through the open nostrils and ears. It is entirely plausible that this is an intentional design feature, and would create quite an effect, especially if more than one mace where to be swung in this manner during a parade.
