19th C Treen Candle Barn Lantern Old Blue Paint W/door Aafa :
Certainly one of the best candle lanterns I have ever owned. If you want early blue paint, this is one of the best you will ever see!!! Wonderful, early treen candle barn lantern, beautifully made. Great dry painted surface, totally honest. It retains the naïve small iron candle socket cup attached to the base. The glass is old, I can see imperfections on at least 2 panels. The door has old wire snipe hinges, and a wire latch. The corner posts extend through the top and bottom to form legs. 9 ½” tall – 11” to top of smoke cover (14” to top of handle) and 6” wide, it is all hand made. The top has a circular smoke hole with iron cover, and a wire handle for carrying or hanging. There is a crack across the top from wood shrinkage due to age, but no looseness or wiggle. See the last photo from"Early American Antique Country Furnishings" by Neumann for a similar example. Great piece of early lighting – Don’t let it get away!!

To help answer some questions.....The candle cup is iron and is secured through the bottom. Because of the old tallow leakage which I did not want to disturb, you can not make it out exactly from the pictures but there is iron wire, like the snipe hinges, protrouding through bottom. As far as age, I date it last 1/2 of 19th c.There is a tin ceiling....I believe it to be an original replacement after substantial burn on the original wood. There appears to be quite a bit of burn damage when looking through the smoke hole. The wooden upright posts are held in place with 4 original wood pegs on bottom....Top is missing pegs, but fit seems to be relatively tight...I think maybe they are wedged. I am guessing that some glass may be replaced because of the missing top wood pegs, however I can see the imperfections of old glass in at least two panes. I do not see any other repairs.....only the normal wear that you would expect for its age. The surface is dry and wonderful and the color is an honest old soldier blue.
