19TH CENTURY ALPHABET & MOTIF SAMPLER BY SARAH ANN JONES 1868:

Mid 19th century sampler by Sarah Ann Jones 1868. This sampler, worked in wool on an open weave canvas, is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The top half of the canvas is stitched with rows of alphabet letters and numbers with a crown and pair of diamond motifs at the end of the second row. Beneath the letters is a broad central plaque with Sarah Ann\'s details inside with three motifs around them\"Sarah Ann Jones Born January 15th 1855 Finished 1868\" The bottom edge of the canvas has a central tree motif with crowns and diamonds on each side and the whole thing is surrounded by a strawberry border.The canvas has overall discolouration, quite dark, and the colours of the wool are good, albeit not as vibrant as when this piece was first made. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and shows how rich the colours were when Sarah Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher at some point of time and there are visible tack marks around the edges of the canvas. Also the top and bottom edges have been cut which has resulted in some fraying in places and some stitch loss to the border pattern. Measures 13\" across x 12\"
