19thc Brass French Powder Compact Case Filigree Jeweled Enameled Portrait Makeup For Sale
This sale features a stunning French powder/compact case. This delicate little box measures 2 ½ inches wide, 1 ½ inches deep, and is 3/8ths of an inch in height.
The case is made of brass, and my best guess is this one dates to the late 19th century. It is marked on the back of the case “Made in France”.
The lid features ornate and delicate filigree work, complete with 10 costume jewels, and a center portrait hand painted and enameled. There is no damage to the lid, and all the jewels and portrait are original to the piece.
The sides feature an Eastlake style aesthetic movement design that completely surrounds the base. Once opened, the inside of the lid has the original beveled mirror and even has the two original powder pads. Regret to say but the actual powder has long disappeared. There is one small area of the mirror which has de-silvered from the back and presents as if it is cracked but it is not.
A stunning and unique compact for the discriminating collector.
