19thc Japan Hansatsu Note ("bookmark Money" ) 1820-1870 Unusual Look For Sale
This is a most Unusual banknote from 19th century JAPAN: a "Hansat-su" note, size: approximately 1 3/4" by 6". 2-Sided. Printed on heavy, buff-colored cardboard w/black & red over-printing. Nice Condition-- VF+ or slightly better-- w/some VERY Light "soiling" + wear; otherwise, o.k.....These little strips of paper--sometimes referred to as "bookmark money"-- were a form of scrip issued during Japan's Edo period. They were issued to supplement the shortage of metal coinage. Most hansatsu notes carried a value in silver, but were also issued in gold and even copper. The hansatsu note offered here is one of the medium-sized notes, and dates from the 1860's. Low beginning offer! Buyer pays $1.45S&H, slightly higher for postage outside the U.S. ***Please see scans. I am showing both sides of the note.
