Bindings: Original full leather bindings. Elaborate gilt banding and decorative devices. Each volume with a black leather spine label. All bindings are solid. The 5th volume has been rebacked, retaining the original boards and with the original spine laid down. It also has been coated with something, perhaps shellac. It is not as attractive as the others. Please refer to the photos which will be provided shortly. The volumes measure 8 3/4" x 5 1/2". The top outer corner of the front board on volume I looks as if it has been chewed a bit. There is a small graze to the headcap of Volume IV.
Description: Rare. Complete in 5 volumes. Foxing/toning as usual. Ink signature atop title pages. Ink stamp "Frederick College Library No 783 Presented By" on title pages. Dampstaing to frontispiece portrait and first few pages of volume I. First Edition of theclassic biography of Washington. "After the able, accurate and comprehensive work of Chief Justice Marshall, it would be presumptuous to attempt a historical biography of Washington" - Jared Sparks. Later American editions omitted the history of the colonies, which is the subject of the first volume. The atlas volume contains ten maps relating to the Revolution and 22pp. of subscriber's names. FedEx does not ship to p.o. boxes, and so any shipment to a p.o. box will be sent via USPS media mail. Overseas shipments will be sent either USPS Express Mail or Priority Mail International. International surface mail is no longer offered. Combined shipping is always available.

However if a po box address is provided, the shipment will be sent Parcel Post since FedEx will only deliver to street addresses.
