1st Ed. "lob Des Rheingaus" By Albert Renger-patzsch, Modern German Photography:
This is the 1953 first edition, hard cover "Lob Des Rheingaus" (Praise of the Rheingau), with over 100 fine photogravure plates, three double page, by Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897-1966), depicting the Rhine River Valley region lying between the cities of Mainz and Bingen in Germany. All photo descriptions are in four languages (German, English, French and Spanish) as is the Preface which describes the history and beauty of the Rheingau, written by archaeologist and art historian, Professor Ludwig Curtius (1874-1954).Renger-Patzsch pioneered "The New Objectivity" in German photography, straightforward pictures, free of avant-garde, 'artistic interventions' as realized in this book's many beautiful black-and-white photographs.
The 208 page book measures 10" X 11 1/2" with gilt titles, no dust jacket (as issued), an old price written on an end-paper is the only writing in the book. The rust color cloth-covered board covers are worn, with cuts to spine and spine edges and a seam crack forming inside front cover; all photographs are clean and clear and pages solidly bound.
