Whatan awesome opportunity to own original photographs of the very first Pope to bephotographed!

The art ofphotography was developed during Pope Pius IX\'s pontificate, and he was thefirst Pope to be photographed, mainly in his later years. Some contemporariesof Pope Pius IX like Cardinal Giuseppe Pecci considered photography inferior topainting and refused to be photographed. Pope Pius IX, however, was open to thenew form of art. [Excerpts fromWikipedia]

These photographs wereacquired by Adolfo Porry Pastorel at least 30 years after they were taken.Adolfo Porry Pastorel was born in 1888 (10 years after Pope Pius IX died) and,at the age of 20, in 1908, he founded the VEDO agency (Visioni EditorialiDiffuse Ovunque). So we cannot know who, in fact, took these photographs.Pastorel was the founder of the paparazzi and founding father of photojournalismin Italy.

[The following are excerpts from theEnglish translation of http://it.wikipedia.org about Adolfo PorryPastorel]

AdolfoPorry Pastorel ( Rome, 1888 - Castel San Pietro Romano , 25 May 1960 ) was a photographer andartist, is considered the father of photojournalism and the precursor of theItalian paparazzii, poised between the record and formal research. Nocoincidence that Tazio Secchiaroli learn fromhim the rudiments of the trade. Born from a cosmopolitan family (grandfatherFrench, English grandmother) has as its patron the director of The MessengerOttorino Raimondi, who directs him toward the first printing experience, thenhired him as a newspaper photographer in the new life and then it Il Giornaleof Italy .

In1908 he founded the “SEE Agency.” Thus began a career fulminans, which led himto become the greatest witness of Roman life and nationally by the \'10s untilthe first world war. Author of the shots that immortalized the stars and themiddle class but also to become famous picture and mirror of its time. As thenumber of Benito Mussolini during the wheat harvest, grappling with the bigparades, like in the privacy of your own home. His style is not, however, ledhim to ever achieve official photos, but to resume the \"behind thescenes\" and the more spontaneous and unpredictable situations.

Heparticipated with his artistic photographs to the XLVI International ArtExhibition in Venice.
