Superb Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Organic Art Nouveau Shape Flower or Spill Vases dated 1898
Each Antique Flower or Spill Vase measures approximately 2 1/8 inches or 54 mm across the widest part of its upper body from side to side by just over 2 1/4 inches or 59 mm across the widest part of its base from side to side and it stands just under 5 3/4 inches or 145 mm tall to the top of its upper rim.
Both vases are madefrom sterlingsilver in typically Art Nouveau organic shapes that have raised relief fluted bodies that have bulbous tops and they each stand on a flared base or foot that has been filled or weighted for stability, the underside of the bases have their original mauve fabric linings to help prevent the vases from scratching the surface that they are placed upon and the vases have Not been engravedwith a previous owners initialsor family monogram all as photographed below, the vases have a combined weight of 148.2 grams and the foot of each one has been impressed with a matching full set of English sterling silver hallmarksthat readas follows,
J.D&S - Crown - Lion Passant - stylized f
J.D&S is the Sheffield silversmith or makers mark of James Dixon &Sons, the Crown is the mark of the Sheffield assay office, the Lion Passant is themark of English sterlingsilver the stylized letter f is the date letter for 1898.
Thecondition is used and Excellent fortheir age.
The vases haveNo Large Dents, No Holes,No Splits, No Cracksand No Repairs that I can find, the vasesstand upright, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the vases hold liquid without leaking, the silver hallmarks are stilllegible although as the vases areused antiques one of them leans over slightly and they have the odd very small shallow dent that is hardly worth mentioning along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, they have the patina of age thatisto be expected and a gentleclean would enhance them greatly. Personally Ithink that this pair of antique flower or spill vases can still beused today and that theywould makea superb additionto any cabinet collection, Ialso think that they look fantastic considering that they are over 110 yearsold.
