Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Dining Table Cutlery Stands or Knife Rests by E Hutton dated 1891
Each Antique Cutlery Stand or Knife Restmeasuresapproximately 2 7/8 inches or 74 mm across its length from end to end by just over 1 1/2 inches or 40 mm across the width its ends from side to side and it stands just under 1 1/2 inches or 37 mmtall to the tops of its ends.
Both cutlerystands or kniferests are made from 75.3 grams of sterling silver and each stand or rest has a step decorated central bar with delightful Gothic shaped pierce decorated ends, the cutlery stands or knife rests have Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and each one has been impressed with a matching full set of English sterling silver hallmark that reads as follows,
EH - Lion Passant - Leopard Head - Q
EH is the Sheffield silversmith or makers mark of Edward Hutton from William Hutton &Sons whose mark is recorded as being used from 1876 to 1898, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office and the letter Q is the date letter for 1891.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for their age.
The Cutlery Stands or Knife RestshaveNoDents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, theknife restsstand straight, the decoration is crisp,the silverhallmarks are stilllegible although as the knife rests are used antiques they dohave some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patinaof age that is to beexpected and a gentle clean would enhance them greatly. PersonallyI think that this pair of antique dining table cutlery standsor knife restscan still be used today and that they would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that they are very stylish items that look absolutely fantastic consideringthat they are over 120 years old.
