Superb Boxed Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Salt Cellar or Sauce Dish & Spoons dated 1897
Each salt cellar or sauce dish measuresapproximately 2 1/4 inches or 57 mm across the width of diameter of its upper rim from side to side anditstands 1 inch or 26 mm tall to the top of its rim.
Each spoon measures approximately 2 1/2 inches or 64 mm in length and it is 3/4 of an inch or 19 mm across the width of its bowl.
The presentation case or box measures approximately 7 1/4 inches or 185 mm across its length from side to side by 3 7/8 inches or 98 mm across its width from the hinges to the front catch and it stands 1 3/8 inches or 36 mm tall to the top of its lid when closed.
The salt cellars or sauce dishes and spoons are all made from sterling silver with gilded or gold plated interiors and bowls and each dish is in a circular shape that has a raised relief fluted decoration that gives it a scrolling upper rim, the salt or sauce dishes each stand on three ball shaped feet and the set is complete with 2 sterling silver spoons that each has a circular bowl with a ball shaped finial on the end of its handle, the salt or sauce dishes and spoons are in their original hinged gold tooled brown leather bound internally fitted blue velvet and silk lined presentation case or box that has a sprung push button catch on the front and this set has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the underside of both salt cellars or sauce dishes along with the inner spoon bowls have each been impressed with a full set of matching English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
H &T - Anchor - stylized x - Lion Passant
H&T is the Birmingham silversmith ormakers markof Hilliard &Thomason, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the stylized letter x isthe date letter for 1897 and the Lion Passantis the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for itsage.
The Salt Cellars or Sauce Dishes &Spoonshave No Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and NoRepairsthat I can find, the salts or dishes stand upright, the decoration and definition is crisp, the internal gilding is a good colour with only minimal wear, the spoons are straight, the box opens with ease and closes tightly,the silver hallmarks are still clearly legible although as the salts or sauce dishes and spoons are used antiques the outer body of the box has some minor scuffs and the set has some extremelyminor surface marks wear from use, it has the patina ofage that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this boxed pair of antique dishes and spoons can still be used today on a dining table for salt, mustard, mint or cranberry sauces and that it will make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that this set looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's almost 120 yearsold.
