The salt cellars or sauce dishes are both made from sterling silver that have been internally gilded or gold plated in the novelty forms of clamorscallop shells that each stands on three relief reed decorated ball shape feet, the salt cellars or sauce dishes have each been embossed or raised relief decorated to give them their shell like definition and they have Not been engravedwith a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the backs of both dishes have been impressed with matching English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,

The Salt Cellars or Sauce Dishes have No Dents, No Splits, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the salts or dishes stand upright, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the dishes hold liquid without leaking, the silver hallmarks are still clearly legible althoughas the salts or dishes are used antiques the internal gilding is worn and they both have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use they have with the patina ofage that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance them greatly. Personally I think that this pair of antique novelty shell shape dishes canstill be used today on a dining table for salt, mustard, mint or cranberry sauces and that they will make a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that they have a delightful look about them considering that they are over 120 yearsold.
