BEAUTIFUL 18thC HINDU GARUDA TEMPLE CHARIOT WOOD CARVING FROM INDIA
Up for sale is this beautifullyhand carvedHindu Garuda wood panel that would have been adorned on a ceremonial chariot that was pulled through the streets of India during festival processions. This carving depicts Garuda holding the Amrita which is the nectar of the gods that gives immortality.
Garuda is a largemythicalbirdor bird-like creature that appears in the Hindu religion, Garuda is usually the mount (vehicle) of Lord Vishnu. Garuda is depicted as having a body of a strong man, with giant wings and an eagle's beak. This ancient deity was said to be so massive that he was largeenoughto block out the sun.
This amazing, very old carving has aged very nicely over time and retains a powerful feel of spiritual presence. On the carving you can see a crust from the gee, or butter lamps used in its presence over the last 200+ years. There are a few small chips, cracks, and other signs of age that all adds character and charm to this piece. You can still see the pegs in the top of the carving where it would have fit into another part of the Chariot. These type of carvings with this age are becoming harder to find. It is a great part on India History, art, and the Hindu religion. It would be an excellent addition for a collector, home shrine, or a yoga studio. Please have a good look at all the pictures of this marvelous carving as part of the description.
